Do you feel you are living your life in Flow right now?

Or are you, like so many people at this moment, experiencing something closer to the opposite – a sense of struggle, resistance, or simply feeling that life is harder than it ought to be?

If the latter feels more familiar, you are in good company. And you are in exactly the right place.

Most of us have known moments when life seems to move with us rather than against us. We find ourselves fully present, work comes easily, the mind becomes still and focused and we find ourselves being creative and more productive without any sense of strain. The right people and opportunities seem to manifest synchronistically.

This is Flow

Flow State is when you lose track of time. It is more than a pleasant feeling. In Flow we seem to have access to a higher intelligence and to abilities we didn’t recognise we had. This goes hand in hand with a deep inner peace and stillness. We no longer have to force ourselves, or anyone else, to make things happen. Instead, we align with a guiding intelligence that moves through the process and we find ourselves working in a state of focused, open allowing.

When we are in Flow, we are aligned with our true nature, our true Being. Life feels easeful. And more often than not, it carries with it the joyful fragrance of enthusiasm.

What Blocks the Flow

If Flow is so natural – so much our true state – why don’t we live there all the time?

The answer is simple: we unconsciously create the thoughts and feelings that block it. It is our own attachment to limited beliefs, fixed perceptions, and the fear-driven agendas of the ego that prevents us from aligning with the intelligence we call Life. We are not being shut out. More often than we realise, we are simply standing in our own way.

The Primary Choice

There is a moment worth learning to notice: the brief pause before we decide how to respond, before we take the next step. This pause – this presence – holds far more than we usually realise.

In any given moment, we are really choosing between only two options: the basket of fear or the Ocean of Love.

Fear closes us down. It restricts the flow of life. Love, on the other hand, opens, expands and reconnects us to Life itself.

Fear has a very persuasive and ‘responsible’ voice. It promises future security and a fulfilled tomorrow – one that always seems to begin with “one day, when…” When the work is finished. When the relationship is right. When there is finally enough. But if we look honestly, fear has never kept its promises. What it delivers, again and again, is the same pain, uncertainty and suffering we have been trying so hard to escape.

Love makes no promises at all. It doesn’t bargain or offer guarantees. And yet, when we choose it, consciously choose it, we discover we have been given everything of lasting value.

I point to love through what I call the Three A’s: Allow. Accept. Appreciate.

Three simple but profound orientations that can only ever be lived in one place – the present moment.

Flow is when we are aligned with Love rather than driven by fear.

The Choice That Shifts Our Life

Our future happiness is not found by waiting for it. It is found by choosing – consciously, right now, and then again in the next now moment – love over fear.

The acronym I use for fear, as many of you know, is false evidence appearing real. The ego chooses the false, love chooses is’ness. When we choose from our authentic power, from who we truly are, the outcomes are infinitely richer than anything the fear-based ego, with its neediness, its insecurities and its endless self-serving desires, could ever produce.

Much of what happens to us in life is not our choice. How we go through it – how we experience it – is our creation.

And yet we are only truly free to choose and to shape how we experience life when we live in awareness, consciousness and presence. What we hold onto from the past, and what we carry with us into the future, becomes a conscious choice only when we decide, with clarity and honesty, what truly matters.

So much of it comes down to this: do we see life through the filter of fear, or through the eyes of love?

Sadly, many of us default to fear again and again, and in doing so, we insidiously rob ourselves of the peace, joy and fulfilment that are already ours, available right now, in this present moment.

Happiness, and real success, is to spend as much time as possible in Flow State.
